Hi, I'm Ruby on Rails - Part 2

by gregg on May 15, 2007

Yesterday we released the first of four commercials filmed in the style of the Mac vs PC ads. The rest of the ads are with the PHP guy, who looks strangely like the Java guy. ;-)

Gregg Pollack and Jason Seifer from RailsEnvy present:

Ruby on Rails vs PHP - Migrations - ad #2 of 4

Jason and I are both pretty stoked for Railsconf in 2 days, hopefully see many of you there!

Are comments closed at the “Web 2.0 Expo Wisdom” post? I could not activate the comment form.

I take issue with point #7 “The average user…typical user always feels like an idiot…”

Wrong. Developers are idiots for not running non-invasive user observation tests with typical users of varying skills.

Users are typically, not idiots, rather: they are in a hurry, impatient, expecting web norms to prevail in sites, multi-tasking, distracted, and only skimming and scanning your site for relevant or entertaining material, or functions to use, like a contact form or what have you.

Altruistic design accommodates user realities, without dumbing everything down to obnoxious level. Narcissistic design is doing whatever you want, and sneering at users.

Our team is thinking about switching from PHP 5 to Ruby on Rails, BTW.

Great set of ads. Keep up the good work.

I think the Java one was better so far. This commercial could have done a lot more to describe the pains of PHP development rather than just hit on a DB issue. How about poking fun at all of the half-assed “PHP on Rails” frameworks out there, or the fact that you can’t implement ActiveRecord in PHP, or how PHP can’t run as a true application server, or how there is no integrated testing, etc… I’m sure the list could go on a lot longer but I need to get back to work!

Get mad, PHP!

I actually like this one better than the Java ad. The acting is actually quite good, well done! Can’t wait to see the other two.

I can’t wait to see what they do to asp.net…

Uh oh… 3 developers all checked a green circle into SVN , time to google for a hack fix

Funny stuff guys! I’m currently a Java guy who (over the last 3 months) has been training myself to all the Rails goodness (REST, etc… wow, it’s nice!)

Anyway, the guys at work weren’t nearly as impressed, but then again, they’re a bunch of old hats stuck in their ways.

I get it, baby toys are better than stacks of sql files.

Mat SchafferMay 15, 2007 @ 09:17 PM

I was really expecting PHP to say he’d code it into his custom framework when he got home. Ah well…

Poor PHP
